By De Accolade Magazine ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, 29 October 2026, inducted five new helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), reinforcing the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening national security and modernising the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces. The newly inducted aircraft comprise three Leonardo AW-109 Trekker B helicopters and two Airbus H-125 helicopters. Their addition to the NAF fleet is expected to improve operational flexibility, enhance intelligence-gathering capabilities and strengthen air support for troops engaged in military operations across the country. The induction represents another significant step in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to equip the Nigerian Air Force with modern platforms capable of responding effectively to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other threats to national peace and stability. The three Leonardo AW-109 Trekker B helicopters are expected to enhance the NAF’s capacity for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), close air support, armed escort, combat search and rescue, as well as joint operations in support of ground forces. Similarly, the two Airbus H-125 helicopters will provide versatile light-helicopter capabilities for surveillance, tactical mobility and other operational assignments. Together, the five platforms are expected to improve situational awareness, increase responsiveness and strengthen support for troops operating across different theatres of operation. Beyond the acquisition of additional aircraft, the induction highlights the importance of sustained investment in maintenance, logistics, technical expertise and personnel development to ensure that modern military platforms deliver maximum operational value. The Nigerian Air Force has continued to pursue initiatives aimed at improving mission effectiveness and operational readiness through equipment modernisation, professional training and enhanced maintenance practices. The successful integration and deployment of the newly inducted helicopters will therefore be critical to achieving the desired operational outcomes. The ceremony attracted several top government and military officials, including the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, ministers, members of the National Assembly and other senior dignitaries. Their presence underscored the strategic importance of the occasion to Nigeria’s defence and national security architecture. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has consistently emphasised the need to translate investments in modern military equipment into tangible operational gains through mission-focused training, effective maintenance and the professional development of personnel. With the induction of the five helicopters, the Nigerian Air Force is expected to further strengthen its contribution to joint military operations, support ground troops and enhance the protection of Nigeria’s territorial integrity. As the country continues to confront complex security challenges, the effective deployment of modern air assets, supported by competent personnel and sustainable logistics, remains essential to achieving lasting peace and stability. The latest induction consequently reinforces the importance of sustained military modernisation as Nigeria works towards building a more capable, responsive and technologically advanced Armed Forces.
