BENIN- The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) of the Nigerian Army to intensify efforts towards tackling indiscipline, strengthening mentorship and upholding regimentation to enhance troop effectiveness and operational readiness.

The Army Chief gave the charge during the closing ceremony of the Second Regimental Sergeant Majors’ Convention 2026 held in Benin City, Edo State.

The five-day convention brought together RSMs from various Army formations and units, alongside representatives of sister Services and other security agencies.

Lieutenant General Shaibu described RSMs as custodians of the Nigerian Army's professional character, discipline and fighting spirit, stressing that their responsibilities go beyond maintaining military smartness and regimentation during ceremonial parades.

He emphasised that RSMs must ensure discipline in operational environments, promote exemplary conduct even in the absence of supervision and instil unwavering commitment to duty among personnel, particularly under challenging operational conditions.

The COAS further urged the senior non-commissioned officers to strengthen mentorship and address emerging behavioural challenges within the military, particularly drug abuse, gambling, absenteeism and the misuse of social media, which he identified as serious threats to military discipline and professionalism.

He particularly commended the lecture delivered by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), on strategies for combating drug abuse.

Earlier, during a visit to Headquarters 4 Brigade, Lieutenant General Shaibu commended troops for their efforts in maintaining peace and security within their area of responsibility. He disclosed that some of the operational challenges presented by the Brigade Commander had already been addressed.

He charged the troops to remain steadfast in protecting lives and property, safeguarding national interests and decisively confronting criminal elements threatening the nation's security.

He reminded them that military operations must be conducted professionally and strictly within the confines of the law, with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians.

The Army Chief reiterated that discipline, professionalism and exemplary conduct remain indispensable to building a resilient, combat-ready and effective Nigerian Army capable of discharging its constitutional responsibilities.

He expressed appreciation to the General Officer Commanding 2 Division, resource persons, and the Government and people of Edo State for their contributions towards the successful hosting of the convention even as he acknowledged the sustained support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, towards the Nigerian Army's ongoing efforts to strengthen its operational capacity and institutional effectiveness.
