Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Military Reform, Modernisation as Nigeria Marks 66th Independence Anniversary

ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s Armed Forces through military modernisation, improved personnel welfare, technology-driven operations and enhanced national security capabilities. The President made the commitment in his Independence Day address to Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, 2026, as the nation marked its 66th Independence Anniversary. As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Tinubu acknowledged the sacrifices of Nigerian soldiers and other security personnel who continue to place their lives at risk in defence of the nation. He commended the men and women of the Armed Forces and security services for their service, describing their sacrifices as an important part of Nigeria's journey as an independent nation.

The President's broader security reform agenda has increasingly focused on transforming the Armed Forces into a more modern, technologically equipped and intelligence-driven force capable of responding to contemporary security threats. Earlier in 2026, the Federal Government stated that it was investing in modern military hardware and building the capacity of personnel to improve operational planning and combat readiness. The administration also emphasised the use of emerging technologies, intelligence and surveillance in confronting terrorism and other security threats. The 2026 Federal Government budget also placed ₦5.41 trillion on defence and security, with priorities including modernisation of the Armed Forces, intelligence-driven operations, border security and technology-enabled surveillance. Improved Welfare for Military Personnel Another significant component of the administration's military reform agenda has been personnel welfare. In August 2026, President Tinubu approved salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for Armed Forces personnel, with about 250,000 personnel expected to benefit from the new salary structure. The measure was presented by the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel and recognise their sacrifices in the service of the nation. The welfare component is particularly significant as Nigeria continues to rely on its Armed Forces to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other security threats across different parts of the country.

The administration has also highlighted the need for the military to move beyond traditional approaches to national security. President Tinubu emphasised that intelligence, surveillance, technology and improved operational capabilities as important tools in dealing with modern security threats. The Federal Government he said has also pointed to improved intelligence coordination and inter-agency cooperation as part of its evolving security strategy. The approach reflects the changing nature of threats facing Nigeria, where terrorism, criminal networks, cyber-enabled activities, border insecurity and other forms of asymmetric warfare increasingly require sophisticated responses.

The President's Independence Day message also linked national security with economic development. According to Tinubu, prosperity cannot be achieved without security adding that a secured environment is necessary for farmers to cultivate their land, businesses to operate, industries to expand and citizens to live and work without fear. The administration's stated objective is therefore to strengthen the capacity of the security architecture while creating conditions for economic growth and improved living standards. For Nigeria's Armed Forces, this means continued emphasis on modern equipment, professional training, intelligence gathering, inter-service cooperation and personnel welfare. The mesaage is coming at a period when the Federal Government is seeking to consolidate reforms across the nation's security architecture. The administration has previously announced measures aimed at improving the capabilities of the Armed Forces and security agencies, while also expanding recruitment and strengthening intelligence and technology-based operations. As Nigeria enters its 67th year as an independent nation, the President's message places national security and the continued strengthening of the Armed Forces within the broader objective of building a stable, secure and prosperous country. For the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Independence Anniversary remains both a celebration of the nation's sovereignty and a reminder of the continuing responsibility to defend Nigeria's territorial integrity, protect its citizens and preserve national unity.
