The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander, Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Ayobami Fadairo, has commended the National President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Dr Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu, for her commitment to improving the welfare of military families and supporting vulnerable members of society. The GOC gave the commendation when Dr Shaibu and her entourage paid a courtesy visit to Headquarters 82 Division, Enugu, during her maiden visit to the Division’s NAOWA Chapter. Major General Fadairo acknowledged the Association’s humanitarian interventions, noting that its welfare programmes had contributed to improving the living conditions of military families and other beneficiaries. He also highlighted the progress recorded by the Division and Operation UDO KA in promoting peace and stability in the South-East, which has enabled residents to pursue their legitimate activities with greater confidence. He urged NAOWA to sustain its humanitarian efforts and explore additional initiatives to improve the welfare of personnel and their families. He reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to maintaining a strong partnership with the Association, describing the collaboration as essential to boosting morale, strengthening family welfare and enhancing operational effectiveness. Earlier, Dr Shaibu said the visit was intended to appreciate the GOC for his continued support to the 82 Division NAOWA Chapter and to strengthen the existing relationship between the Association and the Division. She described NAOWA as a leading humanitarian organisation committed to empowering military families and assisting vulnerable members of the barracks community. As the 25th National President, she said her vision was to build a united and innovative Association capable of delivering sustainable welfare programmes. Highlighting the Association’s achievements, Dr Shaibu disclosed that NAOWA had upgraded and furnished the Accident and Emergency Ward at the Military Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, and donated medical equipment to improve healthcare delivery. She added that the Association had sponsored members to participate in leadership and development programmes, seminars and professional courses within and outside Nigeria to strengthen their capacities and promote healthy living. According to her, NAOWA had distributed more than 16,000 palliative packages to members of NAOWA and the Nigerian Army Soldiers’ Wives Association (NASWA), widows of fallen heroes and religious institutions. The Association had also empowered 394 youths through training in information and communication technology and fashion design. She further revealed that more than 800 widows across NAOWA chapters had benefited from free grants of at least 10 shares each through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, among other welfare initiatives. Dr Shaibu expressed gratitude to Major General Fadairo for his support, noting that the cooperation had strengthened the Chapter’s capacity to implement welfare programmes in line with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff. As part of her visit, the NAOWA President conducted a humanitarian outreach for widows, during which food items and cash assistance were distributed to beneficiaries. She also commissioned several projects at NAOWA Group of Schools, Enugu, executed under the leadership of the 82 Division NAOWA Chairperson, Mrs Hilda Ijeoma Fadairo. The projects included science laboratories and a five-a-side football pitch. A 14-classroom block constructed during the tenure of the immediate past Chairperson, Mrs Oritseseyisan Adeola Olatoye, was also commissioned. Speaking at the event, Mrs Fadairo said the facilities would enhance the learning environment and support the academic and overall development of students. She thanked Dr Shaibu for personally commissioning the projects and providing leadership and support for the welfare of Nigerian Army families. She also acknowledged the contributions of her predecessor towards the construction of the classroom block, while expressing appreciation to the Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and his wife for their support. Mrs Fadairo further commended the GOC, commanders, staff officers and NAOWA members for their contributions to the successful completion of the projects. She urged the school management to maintain the facilities properly and encouraged students to remain disciplined, dedicated and focused on their studies. The visit highlighted the continuing partnership between the Nigerian Army and NAOWA in promoting the welfare of military families, supporting vulnerable groups and improving educational opportunities within the barracks community.
