The Enugu State Police Command has arrested five suspects in connection with the alleged vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, including solar streetlights, road traffic signs and materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation. TVC News monitored by De Accolade Magazine reports that the suspects were arrested in three separate operations carried out by police operatives between September 15 and 27, 2026. According to the report, two of the suspects, identified as Wisdom Nuhu and Moses Jonathan, were arrested on September 27 after they were allegedly sighted negotiating the sale of a suspected stolen solar streetlight at a scrap dump in New Artisan Market, Enugu. The police reportedly recovered the solar streetlight and, during interrogation, the two suspects allegedly confessed to vandalising and stealing it earlier that day from Graceland Estate, Independence Layout. In another operation on September 24, operatives of the Abakaliki Road Division arrested 35-year-old Chukwudi Nwigbo along Abakaliki Road, GRA, Enugu. The command said Nwigbo and an accomplice, who reportedly escaped, were detected by the Enugu State Command-and-Control Centre while allegedly removing road traffic signs. Several vandalised road signs bearing different inscriptions were subsequently recovered from the suspect, according to the police. The third operation reportedly took place on September 15 and involved the arrest of Zubairu Hamanpedimso, 31, and Mohamed Adamu, 21. The two men were arrested by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, working in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group, over an alleged conspiracy to vandalise and steal materials belonging to the Enugu State Water Corporation. Police said a bag containing iron materials, bolts and nuts allegedly vandalised and stolen from the corporation was recovered from the suspects. The Command said all five suspects had been arraigned and remanded in correctional custody pending further hearing, while efforts were continuing to apprehend other suspected accomplices who remain at large. The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the police operatives and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group for what he described as their prompt response, which led to the arrests and recovery of the allegedly stolen items. CP Giwa also urged residents of the state to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information on activities capable of undermining public infrastructure and security. The arrests come amid growing concerns over the vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, which can undermine government investments and deprive residents of essential services. The police have reiterated their commitment to protecting critical infrastructure across the state and bringing those found culpable before the law.
