The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of its personnel and their families, describing quality healthcare as a critical pillar of troop morale, operational readiness and overall military effectiveness.

This was contained in a press release issued on Thursday, 29 October 2026, by the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, following the unveiling of the newly constructed Headquarters, Nigerian Army Medical Corps, at Muhammadu Buhari Cantonment, Giri, Abuja.

According to the statement, General Shaibu, while unveiling the facility, charged the Nigerian Army Medical Corps to sustain efforts towards improving healthcare delivery to officers, soldiers, their families and members of barracks communities. The COAS emphasised that investment in comprehensive medical services goes beyond the treatment of illnesses, noting that the physical well-being of military personnel and their families remains essential to building a healthy, motivated and combat-ready force. He maintained that access to responsive and quality healthcare would significantly enhance operational effectiveness while assuring personnel that their welfare and that of their loved ones remain a priority of the Army leadership.

General Shaibu also commended the Nigerian Army Medical Corps for its outstanding contributions to medical support during military operations, routine healthcare delivery and humanitarian interventions across the country. He expressed confidence that the new headquarters would strengthen administrative coordination, enhance medical service delivery and provide a more conducive working environment for the Corps to effectively discharge its responsibilities.

The Army Chief further urged the Corps to maximise the opportunities offered by the new facility to promote innovation, professionalism and efficient healthcare services in line with his Command Philosophy of Sound Administration and the Soldier First Concept.

Earlier, the Corps Commander Medical, Brigadier General Innocent Ewunchola, expressed appreciation to the COAS for his visionary leadership and sustained commitment to improving the Army’s medical infrastructure. He assured that the Corps would remain dedicated to providing efficient, accessible and quality healthcare to all eligible beneficiaries, while ensuring the proper maintenance and effective utilisation of the newly unveiled facility.
