The Nigerian Army has organised a five-day Leadership Awareness and Development Course for senior non-commissioned officers (NCOs) of 8 Division and Sector 2, Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, as part of efforts to strengthen leadership capacity, promote discipline and enhance operational effectiveness. The course, held at the headquarters of 8 Division in Sokoto, was designed to equip participants with the leadership skills, professional knowledge and decision-making abilities required to meet the demands of contemporary military operations. The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander, Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgha Paul Koughna during his remarks emphasised the importance of effective leadership at the non-commissioned officer level, noting that senior NCOs play a critical role in translating commanders’ directives into practical action at the unit level. He urged participants to take the lessons learned during the course seriously and apply them in their daily responsibilities, particularly in supervising personnel, maintaining discipline, mentoring junior soldiers and ensuring compliance with established military procedures. Koughna stressed that discipline, professionalism and sound judgement remain essential qualities for military personnel, especially those entrusted with leadership responsibilities in operational environments. He further encouraged the participants to demonstrate integrity, accountability and commitment to duty, noting that their conduct and leadership styles could significantly influence the morale, cohesion and performance of the troops under their supervision. The GOC also underscored the need for continuous professional development within the Armed Forces, explaining that military leadership requires constant learning, adaptability and the ability to respond effectively to changing operational demands. According to him, senior NCOs occupy an important position in the military command structure, serving as a vital link between commissioned officers and soldiers. Their ability to communicate instructions clearly, resolve routine personnel challenges and enforce standards contributes significantly to unit effectiveness. The five-day course also provided an opportunity for participants to strengthen their understanding of leadership principles and exchange professional experiences relevant to their responsibilities across the Division and Sector 2. The training forms part of broader efforts to improve personnel development and sustain operational readiness among troops engaged in security operations in the North-West. Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains a major military operation aimed at tackling banditry and other security threats in the region through coordinated military action and collaboration with relevant security agencies. The Nigerian Army continues to emphasise professional training, discipline and leadership development as essential components of building a responsive, effective and mission-ready force. The course is expected to enhance the capacity of participating senior NCOs to discharge their duties more effectively, strengthen unit cohesion and contribute to the achievement of operational objectives.
