ACHI- Physical works on the proposed revitalisation and upgrade of the Enugu State Veterinary School, Achi, to the Enugu State Veterinary College of Technology are expected to commence soon, as the legislative and regulatory processes required to transform the institution into an OND and HND-awarding tertiary institution continue. The proposed upgrade follows the approval announced by the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, during his visit to Achi in December 2025, when he expressed his administration’s commitment to revamping the institution and expanding its educational mandate. The project is expected to reposition the school to offer Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes, subject to the necessary statutory approvals, accreditation and compliance with the requirements of the relevant regulatory bodies. The ongoing preparatory process includes the development of the required legislative framework through the Enugu State House of Assembly and the completion of other administrative and regulatory formalities ahead of physical implementation.

The push to revitalise the Achi Veterinary School gained formal legislative attention in October 2024, when Hon. Osita Eze, the member representing Oji River State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, moved a motion calling for the revitalisation of the Enugu State Veterinary School and Farm School in Achi. During the debate, Eze highlighted the institution’s historical importance to veterinary and agricultural development in the former Eastern Region and called attention to its deteriorating condition. He also raised concerns about the encroachment of the institution’s land and the need to protect the school’s property through the construction of a perimeter fence. The motion urged the state government to revive the institution and restore its capacity to train veterinary and agricultural professionals which drew the support of other lawmakers, who highlighted the importance of trained veterinary personnel to livestock management, animal health and the state’s agricultural development.

Thisn development underscored the need for a comprehensive legal and administrative framework to support the institution’s proposed transformation. Beyond his advocacy for the Achi Veterinary School, Hon. Osita Eze has participated in legislative activities relating to education administration, institutional accountability and public-sector management.

These legislative engagements form part of his documented activities in the Assembly, particularly in areas involving education, institutional oversight and the management of public assets. His motion on the Achi Veterinary School remains directly relevant to the proposed upgrade, having placed the institution’s deteriorating condition, land protection and need for revitalisation before the state legislature in 2024.

The proposed transformation received a major policy boost during Governor Mbah’s visit to Achi in December 2025, when he announced the approval to revitalise and upgrade the institution to an OND and HND-awarding college. The announcement followed the earlier legislative advocacy and renewed attention to the school’s future. The work now progressing involves the legislative and regulatory requirements necessary to establish the institution’s new status and secure the relevant approvals and accreditations. While physical works have yet to commence, the completion of these preliminary processes is expected to pave the way for the implementation phase. The proposed upgrade is intended to go beyond the rehabilitation of existing facilities. It is expected to establish a stronger institutional framework for technical and professional training in veterinary and related disciplines.

When the upgrade is completed and the relevant programmes receive accreditation, the proposed college could expand access to specialised technical education, improve the supply of trained personnel and strengthen veterinary services across Enugu State. The institution could also contribute to improved livestock health, agricultural productivity and the development of skilled manpower needed in animal husbandry and related industries. For Achi and neighbouring communities, the project holds the prospect of renewed educational activity, increased local economic opportunities and a stronger institutional presence. The transition from legislative advocacy to the implementation of the proposed upgrade also illustrates how constituency representation, legislative action and executive policy decisions can intersect in the development of public institutions. With the necessary paperwork still in progress, attention is now focused on completing the outstanding requirements ahead of the commencement of physical works. The anticipated transformation of the Achi Veterinary School into the Enugu State Veterinary College of Technology represents a proposed new chapter for the institution. As the legislative and regulatory processes advance, the next major milestone will be the commencement of physical works and the eventual delivery of an accredited tertiary institution serving Achi, Oji River and Enugu State at large.
